Well. Nevermind what I said last time. I have a new story I need to write. Yes. Again. And this is a rather summery story, so hopefully I will be able to stick with it. It's a sequel to Chalice Keep and somewhat Harry Potter-inspired. Should be... interesting.

Sometimes I think it's just not worth it. This whole writing thing. Argh. I don't know.

The novel I mentioned in my last post is going quite well. I'm putting it online (in a password protected place) for some friends to read, so that's inspiring me to write regularly. I'm trying to update it every day. (If you're interested in reading, let me know.)

I started a new novel today. It's sort of ... experimental? I guess. It's in the form of e-mails, IMs, and online diary entries between a group of women. I'm hoping that it will go pretty quickly--since it's not historical it doesn't need as much research as some of my other projects. My goal is to have it ready to send to agents/editors by the end of the year.

Eek!

I did it! I submitted something! Yay. And yes, I know I need to do that regularly, but it's still scary. I recently found a poem I'd written almost two years ago and thought was rather good. Not great, but not bad. Today I revised it a bit, gave it a title ("Eulogy for a Peach"), and e-mailed it to Poetry Bay, an online poetry magazine. I decided to try online markets with this one, as it's something old (read: I haven't put tons of work into it) and I'd like to get a few more writing credits relatively quickly before I try to break into bigger markets. I'm hoping that since it's all by e-mail, the response time will be quicker this way. And I won't have spent anything on postage.

I'm starting a "submissions out" count to keep track of these things over on the sidebar. :-)

The eternal question

This weekend, for various reasons, I became even more determined in my decision to become writing-supported SOON, rather than later. So it brings up a question I've been wrestling with for years. Do I try to write short stories, which go quicker and are perhaps more easily published, or do I stick with novels?

I'd love to write short stories. I've written a few, mostly for college classes. My problem has always been coming up with plots for them. I seem to think in novel-length plots. Does anyone know how I can get over this???

I've found some contests to enter, so I'm happy about that. A few are at Writer's Digest... no huge prizes or anything, but it would be something for the resume. And the Exeter Public Library is making a poetry anthology about the town. The only problem is that I've only been to Exeter once... but I do have rather strong memories of a bookstore there, so I can write about that, right? And next week I'm going to go hear Dan Brown there, so I'll spend some time in the town and library. I'm sure I can come up with a few poems. And that would be exciting! It's a real book!
